[Scientists going down the Aiguille du midi]
A scientist rappels down the Aiguille du Midi

Measuring the melting of the Alps
Listen [20 mins]:
Temperatures in the Alps are predicted to rise two to three degrees in the coming decades, but with all the ice and snow around, it is hard to see the changes day-to-day. Now scientists are seriously investigating the effects of global warming on the glaciers and permafrost, and they’re finding that a lot is changing.

This documentary starts with a group of scientists who are measuring the warming of the Aiguille du Midi, on the Mont Blanc in the French Alps. It then goes down to a ski resort and a nearby town to see the effect of climate change on tourism, and meets members of a local ecotourism group.

Read a related article on RFI about the challenges of making the global issue of climate change something to address on a local level.

Produced for RFI and aired December 10, 2009.
